Local dancer Ritah Dancehall has faced criticism from the public after she appeared on stage and rubadaubbed Jamaican singer Dexta Daps while wearing a Gomesi.
It should be noted that the Jamaican had a sold-out show at Lugogo Cricket Oval, and Ugandan girls made him taste some Pearl of Africa juices.
Ritah Dancehall was among those who enjoyed the sensual performer. She stepped on stage while wearing a Gomesi, the traditional attire for most cultures in the country, including the Baganda. She then pulled it off and underneath she had been wearing a very revealing costume that left nothing to the imagination.
She and Dexta then resorted to erotic antics on stage that left everybody cheering on. However, netizens online weren’t happy with the dancer’s style and portrayal of the Gomesi. They argued that it was blasphemous and disrespectful to the local culture.
“Why did she have to put on a Gomesi, disrespecting our traditional wear,” said one social media user.
“This is disrespecting the culture,” said another.
“Pure insult to Baganda culture dress,” another said.
Dexta Daps’ performance has faced immense criticism from large sections of the public who deemed it immoral. Many have argued for such performances not to be tolerated in Uganda ever again.
This comes at a time when Ugandan entertainers are facing backlash for being vulgar in both their songs and dress code. Among those who have been called out was Ritah Dancehall who was at the center stage of this controversy.
